BM3D Update

Posted: 19th November 2012 by David in Black Mountains 3 Day news

The Black Mountains 3 Day is back in 2014!

Why aren’t we doing it in 2013?  Well, we had a great 2012 edition of BM3D so the decision was not taken lightly – in essence we have an opportunity to spend 2013 living somewhere warm  and have decided that’s exactly what we are going to do.  So, with a new addition to our family, we are heading down to Southern Europe for a bit of surfing, a lot of sun and even more stage racing.  We will be back in 2014 with lots of new ideas and inspiration from our European friends.

Want to see what we get up to?  Follow us on Twitter (@BeardedManNews), Facebook (www.facebook.com/BeardedManNews) or keep checking back on our blog for regular updates.

Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far and to all the riders who have put us on the map!

You can still contact us at info@beardedman.co.uk.

Happy riding…

The Bearded Man Crew

We are once again blown away but the support we have received from some amazing companies.  Step in Solid State – the new kids on the block in the ‘biking community’ arena.   Some of the Solid State guys are riding at this years event and Dan got hold of us to see if they could get a bit more involved in the BM3D.  We have had our eyes on the Solid State website for a few months and we like what they are up to.

For the riders Solid State are offering up Muvi HD POV cameras and other lifestyle products as prizes from their partner Veho and they will also have presence in the tented village – so definitely pop over and have a chat.

A couple of words from Dan:

‘Solid State Biking are really excited to be at the 2012 Black Mountains 3 Day event.  After speaking with one of our riders, Jason Tilling, who rode the event in 2011 we couldn’t wait to get signed up!  We will be at the event for the whole weekend and will also be riding and filming!  We will have a load of Muvi HD cameras on special offer for the weekend only so come on over and check them out. We will also be producing a video edit of the weekend so keep a look out for the cameras and be sure to join in with the fun and banter – it will all make for better viewing!

Bearded Man are delighted to announce that Ultimate Sports Engineering (USE) will be supporting the Black Mountains 3 Day in 2012.  Josh Ibbett rode the 2011 event and contacted us about getting involved in 2012 with prize sponsorship and setting up a stand in the tented village – so a huge thanks to John from USE/Exposure and Josh, who will once again be riding!  Here is some info from John, Josh and the rest of the USE team:

‘USE are proud to be supporting the 2012 Black Mountain 3 Day event. After hearing lot of positive feedback about the inaugural event in 2011 we just couldn’t miss out in the opportunity to be part of this year’s event. We will be present at the event throughout the weekend with our demo van to show off our mountain bike products including our world renowned Shokposts and SUMO seat posts as well as our range of Mountain bike handlebars and stems.

There will be the chance to win a set of finishing kit for your bike as we donate 2 stems, 2 sets of handlebars and 2 of our XCR shokposts to the prize fund.

Why not grab a bargain too, as we will have a range of special offers available for the race weekend.

As the event gets nearer we’re getting super excited and can’t wait to hit those Welsh trails hard!’

For more details see our website www.use1.com

We are so happy with the Morvélo designed race jersey that we couldn’t help showing everyone on our social media sites.  So, a huge thanks to Oli from Morvélo who has once again done a great job on the design front.

We have just heard from Jon at GORE BIKE WEAR® and he has filled us in on the products available to demo for riders at the 2012 Black Mountains 3 Day.  The Bearded Man Team love GORE products, particularly the jackets and the GORE-TEX® shorts – both have made route scouting super pleasant, even in the Welsh rain!

The process is you turn up to the tented village – find the GORE BIKE WEAR® gazebo, speak to Jon or one of the GORE team about the products you would like to try out – ride like a demon and then drop the product back at the GORE gazebo – it couldn’t be simpler!  Products are available to try for the time trial on the Friday evening….and both endurance days (Saturday and Sunday).

Available to demo at this years event will be a range of GORE BIKE WEAR® products for riders to keep you comfortable whatever the weather condition. Starting out in the morning, you may wish to ride in a WINDSTOPPER® soft shell; the ALP-X SO Jacket is Gore’s MTB specific soft shell and perfect for those cooler days in the saddle. Remove the sleeves and you have a gilet as well as 3 zipped pockets to store valuables and nutrition. Also on offer is PHANTOM SO Jacket (men’s and ladies), Gore’s best selling garment, highly versatile jacket. Remove the sleeves once again and you have a built in short sleeved t-shirt, either worn next to the skin or with a Gore baselayer you have a truely year-round riding jacket.

Should the weather take a turn for the worse (hopefully none of these jackets are needed – BM ed), Gore will have their latest GORE-TEX® Active Shell jackets to demo as well as GORE-TEX® waterproof shorts. The FUSION GT AS jacket (as shown on the right) will be available to demo during the event should you require a waterproof. Made of GORE-TEX® Active Shell laminate, this is Gore’s most breathable waterproof to date and offers excellent next-to-skin comfort. The ladies OXYGEN GT AS will also be available for the ladies.

If you have never experienced the benefit of wearing GORE-TEX® shorts on a wet ride then do take the opportunity to test out the ALP-X GT Shorts (as shown below).

For those sunnier days Gore will also have available a selection of jerseys. The ALP-X jersey will be available for men and the OXYGEN FZ Lady Jersey.

If you have any questions about GORE BIKE WEAR® products please don’t hesitate to fire an email to Bearded Man and we will give you all the information or contact details you will need.

The Black Mountains 3 Day is a ‘local event’ even though we field a diverse group of riders from all over the UK and even the world.  We do everything we can to support local businesses with the objective of promoting all the good things that come from in and around the Brecon Beacons.

Step in Tudor Brewery!  A classic family run micro brewery that has been around for a while…serving local establishments seasonal ales.  So at this years BM3D – riders, companions, marshals and support crew can all fill up their glasses with a very refreshing, light pale ale called Blorenge.  Trust us when we say this ale is a perfect thirst quencher after spending a long summers day on the trails.

Thanks to Jaime and Gaenor – who will be at the tented village demonstrating their range of ales – for the support you have shown to the BM3D, the Bearded Man team are super grateful.

Check out their website here and PLEASE like their Facebook page here.

GORE BIKE WEAR® are on board as the clothing sponsors of the 2012 Black Mountains 3 Day – the Bearded Man team are absolutely delighted to have a brand of this calibre, which has experience in supporting multi-day events, involved in the Black Mountains 3 Day.

Riders are in for an absolute treat when they arrive at the tented village – this is what GORE have to say:

GORE BIKE WEAR® will be supporting this year’s Black Mountains 3 day event with their range of demo garments for competitors to test out during the 3 days of riding. Simply visit the Gore tent in the morning and select a garment to test for the day, ride in it and then drop it back to the Gore guys at the end of your ride. GORE BIKE WEAR® will be bringing along their ALP-X and FUSION mountain bike specific products for riders to demo each day as well as a special event range of  GORE BIKE WEAR® clearance products for riders to purchase (cash only).”

Along with the tryb4ubuy scheme on offer, GORE have also offered up some amazing prizes for a bunch of lucky riders – more news on this later.  There are still available entries – so don’t miss out and sign up NOW!

So amazingly we are already into February!  What happened to January?  As we have been off the blog radar recently, we thought an update would be good.

Registered riders of BM3D will get their first email update in about mid February – as we did last year the contents of this email will include information about the route, the tented village and other important information.  Entries are going well for 2012, we are already above 2011 entry numbers but to keep this event intimate and non-mass market like we have a cap of between 150 – 200 riders (depending on our final tented village location).  This cap will remain forever more!!  So if you know anyone who still wants to sign up give them a nudge – when we are full we are full.

We are in the middle of the big freeze at the moment so even with our best intentions our last trip to Wales was limited in terms of progress.  We have however recruited a local crew from Abergavenny to help out with certain aspects of the event, primarily the route.  Jon Moyle is the man we are trusting with new route ideas, so hopefully he can find, and show us, little gems that we missed in 2011.  We don’t want to change too much of the route because we had some great feedback last year, but a few changes are necessary.

Staying on the route topic, we plan on asking last years riders a couple of questions to help improve the experience. I guess top of that list is the colour ribbon we used to indicate right or wrong way.  In 2011 we had pink ribbon indicating that a rider had taken a wrong turn and blue if the rider was on the right track.  We had a couple of comments in relation to the blue ribbon – so if anyone has ideas of what would be better we would like to know.  A couple of points to remember though: 1) yellow can’t be used as it is used by Forestry Commission’s felling crew and 2) these ribbons are used for guidance and not directions.

We are in talks with potential title sponsors – so expect some great news soon (we hope so anyway).  Why do we need a title sponsor?  We asked the same question and decided that it’s a good idea for a number of reasons, some include:

  • A title sponsor would add credibility to the event (BM3D) and the series.
  • Speaking of series, the plan is to set up a couple more events with the same format (one in Wales, one in Scotland and one in England) – more of this later.  So we believe that this really is an opportunity for a brand to reap the benefits of our series vision, and the result would be a benifit to the participants / volunteers / staff.  If anyone has ideas of a potential candidate please don’t hesitate to contact us.
  • Bearded Man could benefit from a reputable brand, in lots of ways.  From resource, to finance, to marketing support, to operational support, to logistics support etc.  Again the result would mean we could focus on the good stuff like finding the best routes for the events.

Speaking of sponsors, we are delighted and super grateful for the sponsors who have remained with us from 2011 – everyone wants to come back :) and we have a few more sponsors offering up some amazing prizes and support to the Bearded Man Team.  We will be doing a full sponsor report soon so keep your eye on the blog.

Finally, as you might have seen, Bearded Man have a small mtb / road / cross team that will be out and about promoting the ventures under the brand.  So, if you see Johnny Shaw, Jon Moyle or myself, sporting the new Bearded Man kit, please don’t be shy and come over and say hello.  Our team site is still a work in progress but please check us out @ www.racing.beardedman.co.uk or follow us on Twitter @beardedmanRT.

Any comments or suggestions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We are super excited to have Strada Wheels as a sponsor for the Black Mountains 3 Day 2012.  Jonathan from Strada wants to get involved and has offered up some amazing prizes for a bunch of lucky riders at next year’s event.

There is no getting away from it – a good set of hand built wheels is very special and Darren’s (Strada’s wheel builder) meticulous approach, experience and passion for building a good wheel definitely won’t disappoint.  Along with sourcing the most appropriate (light/durable/strong) wheel components, Strada Wheels have a variety of configurations that cover the spectrum of style and price.

The Bearded Man race team (cross and mtb) will be running Strada built wheels and customers who buy complete Van Dessel builds will get the option of wheel builds ranging from the disk cross set up to amazing aero road set ups!  We are so excited about the prospect of working with Jonathan and the rest of the Strada Wheels team in 2012 and beyond.

A bit of information from Strada Wheels:

Strada Hand Built Wheels is here to show the benefits of hand built wheels to cyclists who may not have considered them before. After the frame, the wheel of your bike is the most critical component in how it rides and handles so we consider your weight, height, physique, power, type of bike before selecting a combination rim, hub and spokes to build a wheelset to match you perfectly.

We have stocked ENVE carbon rims, alloy rims from BOR, Stan’s NoTubes, Velocity and our own label light race hubs and famous brands such as American Classic, Carbon-Ti, Tune, PMP and Chris King too. We use DT Swiss and Sapim spokes including the legendary bladed and light CX Ray. We are also building PowerTap hubs for training with data. We are happy to deliver road or MTB wheels throughout UK, Europe / Scandinavia and other destinations on request via TNT.

Visit the website at www.stradawheels.co.uk or call us on +44 (0)1903 750040 to discuss your requirements before you order your new wheels.
